Lawrence County Convention and Visitors Bureau Limestone Capitol of the WorldBedford, known as the "Limestone Capital of the World", Indiana Limestone, is home to around 14,000 people with its excellent schools, outstanding shopping, cultural amenities and small town atmosphere.
The first commercial quarrying in Lawrence County started in 1860, and the quarrying process involved blasting a one year supply of limestone at once, then hand sawing the stone and using horses and oxen to haul it to the mill. In 1866 the first steam-powered saws were purchased, revolutionizing the industry. After the 1871 Chicago fire, limestone soon became the building material of choice in the city of Chicago. Its popularity spread.
In 1926 twenty-four smaller limestone companies, representing over 90% of the area stone industry, set about improving their posture in the business by merging to form the Indiana Limestone Company, Inc. which resulted in the large corporate ownership of twenty-one quarries, thirty-six mills, and over 6,000 acres of land. The years from 1928-1932 proved to be a boom period, during which some of the major contracts were the Nebraska Capitol, Indiana War Memorial, Palmolive Building in Chicago, Dept. of Commerce in D.C. (the largest order ever received), Internal Revenue in D.C., State Capitol of WVA, Mellon Institute in Pittsburgh, Empire State Bldg, and U.S. Post Office in Pittsburgh.
The Depression years hit the industry hard, but by 1940 Congress agreed to use Indiana limestone for the new Pentagon Bldg. Other project followed, such as additions to Tribune Square in Chicago, Washington Cathedral, U.S. Court House, Washington Cathedral Addition, National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, General Office Bldg Proctor & Gamble in Cincinnati; TN State Capitol restoration and repair, the Crescent in Dallas, City-County Bldg in Indianapolis, and the Ronald Reagan Bldg, among others. The limestone industry has come a long way since 1860. Gone are the yearly blasting, hand sawing, and horse/oxen transport. Modern technology and computers are the norm today as the industry continues to prosper. The county has many beautiful quarries with crystal blue water, but none is accessible today for the public visitation. Bedford Chamber of Commerce

He was rescued by helicopter, but the capsule sank. Recovery of the Liberty Bell 7Grissom was assigned to command the first manned flight test of the Apollo capsule. He died along with astronauts Edward White II and Roger Chaffee in a fire during a launch pad test on Jan. 27, 1967. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Apollo Mission Kenneth D. The name "Orange County" was borrowed from Orange County, North Carolina, the home of many of the early settlers to this county in southern Indiana. The early settlers of Orange County, Indiana depended on corn as well as animals. The centerpiece of Orange County is the two-story courthouse located in Paoli. The picturesque Greek Revival building boasts tall columns, white brick and two chimneys. The treasured landmark was built in 1850. The courthouse square is the heart of downtown Paoli and boasts the largest shopping district in the county. With newly renovated brick-lined sidewalks, attractive period lighting and park benches, the downtown have been placed on the national register for historic places.
From the very beginning of it history, Orange Countys modes of transportation have been crucial to its development. Prior to the development of modern-day automobiles and airplanes, the rails provided the most efficient transportation. There are three (3) towns in the county that have small airports - Orleans, Paoli and French Lick.
Paoli gave birth to the entire state of Indiana. That is because in 1805 the initial pivot point was established just south of town to survey all the boundaries in Indiana. The first settlement of Orange County happened in Paolis Southeast Township. In 1807 John Hollowell settled on the Patoka River near the present-day community of Valeene.
Just south of downtown Paoli is the magnificent Pioneer Mothers Memorial Forest, the largest tract of virgin timber known to be remaining in the entire state of Indiana. Formerly known as Coxs Woods, black walnut, beech, oaks, and other magnificent trees tower overhead and wildflowers bloom underfoot on this tract just off of Indiana State Road 37. Joseph Cox has left the 88-acre tract of timber virtually undisturbed since its purchase in 1816.
In addition to the Orange County Courthouse, historic buildings in Paoli include the Lindley House, the Braxtan House, the Newberry Friends Meeting House, the Sherrod House, and the <Mineral Springs Restaurant. The Sherrod House is the current location for the Orange County Historical Museum.
In 1973 construction began on the largest tourist attraction in the county. Patoka Lake filled to its current 8,800-acre reservoir in 1980 and it now includes the full-service Patoka Lake Marina.Paoli Peaks, the center of tourism during the winter in Paoli, opened in 1978. Today, the natural hill with a 300-foot vertical drop has 17 slopes, which can service more than 100,000 skiers and snowboarders per year. A 45,000 square-foot lodge sits atop the hill.
